Be Like Mick

I was just listening to The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" while walking to a local coffee house to get drinks for my wife and me. I'm learning the song for my bar band because we have a gig next Saturday night and we're picking this song up for our guitarist to sing. For the record - he's 60, I'm 63 and we both have plenty left and still love to play out.

But I got to thinking about what an incredible specimen Mick Jagger is and what he does to stay in the kind of condition to both move and sing like he still does at over-80, which, I can tell you, is extraordinary. I'm sure you can find loads of articles and videos on the internet about his specific workout routine that may or may not be an authentic representation of his weekly program. But as a friend and colleague mentioned recently in an interview we did together, principles are more important than process. Process can be (and should be) evolved over time for shifting goals and stages of development; principles endure.

Given that concept, and my coaching eye and shared experience (over-60 athlete/performer), here's my stab at what principles guide Mick's process, and should guide yours as well:

  • Eating nutrient-rich foods in the amounts that help him maintain his body composition and his energy for performing are foundational priorities.

  • Strength training is a component more for maintaining force production capacity and mobility than for aesthetics.

  • Integrating rest, recovery, stress management and listening to how his body responds are critical pieces of his process.

  • He has been adapting both his program (eating, training, recovery, mindset) continually as his body and the demands of his "sport" have changed.

  • What you, I or some knuckleheads arguing in an over-50 Facebook group think he should be doing is of absolutely no concern to him.

It's not simply luck that has given this icon the status he's earned and the multiple decades of success doing what he loves. It's his absolute commitment to doing the right things in the right way, for what he wants right now and into the future.

Are you doing that?
